During the first half of the thirties, Tossa gathered together an important community of national and international artists, among which there were some very well known names: Marc Chagall, Georges Kars, Olga Sacharoff, André Masson, Rafael Benet, Pere Créixams, Enric Casanovas, Francesc Domingo, etc. This was the time when Rafael Benet named Tossa the "Babel of Arts".

Tossa’s Municipal Museum was founded in 1935, having as a main aim the creation of a contemporary art fund which would be the reflection of the situation lived in the village during this productive moment of its history. The Museum was the first of Contemporary Art in Spain.

The Museum opened to the public on the 1st September 1935. It was installed at the ancient governor’s house, the most important building in the walled enceinte of the Vila Vella. The original medieval house was rebuilt during the XVIIIth century, and restored and enlarged in 1985.

It compiles an important collection of modern art, with works of the national and international artists who frequented Tossa during the thirties, and also anterior and posterior works. The Blue Violinist, by Marc Chagall, is one of the most important works of this section. The archaeological section demonstrates the presence of man in our township from the Paleolithical period until the later Middle Ages. It is of particular interest the mosaic of the Roman Villa’s hall (end of the IVth century, beginning of the Vth).
